Distance Graduate Programs in Classics, MA & PhDWe will be accepting applications for Summer 2008 from January-March 28, 2008. Please see the 'Master Application Instructions' and 'Ph.D. Application Instructions' for details. Most teachers cannot afford to leave their jobs, their families, and their homes for extended courses of study. This has made graduate work difficult for many high school teachers as well as for many college instructors without the PhD. The Department of Classics at the University of Florida thus offers graduate level distance courses during the regular academic year (fall and spring). These courses, in conjunction with the department's long-standing two-week summer institutes in Latin, extend to teachers -- no matter where they reside -- workable paths to certification, re-certification, an M.A., and the Ph.D. Teachers may enroll in our courses as non-degree-seeking or as degree-seeking (M.A. or Ph.D.) students. As noted, these distance courses may be combined with the University of Florida's two-week summer institutes in Latin (3-6 credits). The department estimates that students in these programs could reasonably expect to complete an M.A. in three years and a Ph.D. in five years. These degree programs are, again, designed specifically with the needs of elementary, secondary, and college teachers in mind. Geography and full-time employment need not preclude the intellectual (and other) rewards that advanced study can bring. Cost, despite the high pay teachers enjoy (this is irony), may be an issue. We are thus happy to announce that out-of-state teachers are eligible for a much-reduced tuition rate, which is only slightly higher than the rate for in-state tuition. A three-credit-hour graduate-level distance-learning course currently runs about $981 (Spring 2008). Many states and school boards provide tuition assistance as well, and we provide links to some additional funding opportunities in the main menu for the distance-learning program. General information about our department and its graduate programs is available too throughout our departmental web site: http://www.classics.ufl.edu. If you have general or administrative questions about the distance learning program, please email distance@classics.ufl.edu. If you have specific questions about the distance learning program, please contact our Distance Graduate Coordinator, Dr. Velvet Yates, by email at vyates@ufl.edu (Please, do not use aol). |
