COMPARATIVE  STUDY OF GREEK & LATIN LITERATURE

PASTORAL POETRY OF THEOKRITOS & VERGIL

Instructor: Dr. Karelisa Hartigan

In this course students read selected Idylls of Theokritos and the 10 Eclogues of Vergil. In addition to translating the text, students become familiar with a portion of the literature on ancient pastoral and the pastoral ideal. Class sessions will be devoted to reading the texts and discussing the ideas generated by the ancient authors and the modern commentators.  Weekly readings vary: sometimes both an Idyll and an Eclogue are read, sometimes only an Idyll, occasionally only an Eclogue.
There are two written assignments but no final examination; class preparation (and one written out translation) will be the deciding factors in determining reading ability.
