PETRONIUS was the official consultant to Nero's court on elegant living. Noted for his wit, style, and devotion to the pleasures of the flesh, he wrote a superb satirical novel on the wealth, debauchery, greed, and luxury of this decadent age. Students will read selections from this novel (the Satyrica) in Latin. Supplementing the course will be slide presentations and two movies ('Fellini Satyricon' and 'Quo Vadis') dealing with Roman life of the period. There will also be a systematic review of Latin grammar and vocabulary.
